Parallels For Mac Restore

I've used the Mac appliation, but only with limited testing adn without parallels, bootcamp or VMware fusion. For the most part, there isn't a lot of Mac forum action.

I installed Parallels for mac on my machine (imac) and that damaged partially my OS (snow leopard). Meaning that now, when I try to open a .log file it won't cause it tries to open it with notepad on windows and parallels is not installed on there anymore.
Now I was thinking there is any way I can install again snow leopard on my machine without having to do any kind of backup on here? If I put in the snow leopard disc into my imac which is the right type of installation i have to do in order to save all my data and just 'reinstall' the basic OS data?

Ive got Time Machine running on my macbook and that covers the backup of almost everything, but there are also a few programs that i have to run on windows that i use parallels for.

Can Time Machine backup the windows parallels files at the same time ?

Only when the Windows VM is NOT running.

When the VM runs the files are in use and in such a way that a snapshot-backup (which is what Time Machine does with 'open' files) is useless. You will get a backup of the VM's files but they will 99 of a 100 times not be usable to recover the VM.

(Same is true for VM's in VirtualBox or VMWare Fusion too.)
